200 & 400m

Our club’s aim is to provide swimming opportunities for all levels of ability - whether gaining confidence in the pool, through friendly racing at our weekly club nights or for those with a more serious passion - swimming at carnivals.

We cater for those abilities with a pointscore competition that challenges the swimmer's own ability to improve and better their "best" times.

We swim all year round (except school holidays) on Friday evenings.  Races commence at 6:30 p.m.  Each Friday, we swim freestyle and one form stroke (breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly) each week.  Distances swum at Club each week are 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 metres.  We also include IMs, 200m and 400m events.  See our calendar for details.

In summer, races are held in the outdoor 50m pool (unless foul weather sends us indoors).  In winter, we race in the indoor 25m Competition Pool.

Signing On

Signing on for Friday races is easy!

It can either be done using our on line sign on before 5pm on Friday or in our Club Room on Friday night from 6:00pm. If you come to our Club room, our Chief Handicapper will enter swimmers into races.  We use Meet Manager to organise and run our Club nights.  AS FRIDAY CLUB RACES START AT 6.30 PM SHARP,  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SIGN-ON BEFORE 6.15 pm.

Between 6.15 pm and 6.30 pm the race organisers enter all swimmers into heats and lanes.

Pool Entry

Pool entry is $1 for everyone (swimmers and non-swimmers) and you pay the pool entry to the Treasurer in the Club room.  The entry fee goes towards supporting the clubs operating costs for holding BBQ’s during summer, pool hire, end of year trophies, s fees for our swimmers to selected swim meet and social functions.

Club Points

The basis of our competition is that you are swimming against your own time, not the swimmer in the next lane.  Every time a swimmer competes at club it is recorded and points are awarded based upon their times. Points are tracked using Meet Manager and Team Manager software (the software standard worldwide for swimming clubs and carnival management).  The points awarded depend on your time and how much better your time is each week. You do not have to be in training to swim.  Points are displayed on our noticeboard (in the DRAC foyer) and on the Top Times page of our website.

Each Friday night, there is one freestyle and one form stroke event.

Distances

The distance a swimmer competes depends on their ability and not on their age.  Very young and inexperienced swimmers usually start with 12.5m races and as a swimmer’s skills and race times improve, they will move up to 25m, 50m and 100m races for each stroke.  The times a swimmer must achieve to compete at a certain distance are detailed below. The time required to move up to a longer distance is called the elevating times.

Distances swum at Club each week are 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 metres.

The elevating times in order to progress to the next race distance are as follows:

to advance to 50m must swim... to advance to 100m must swim...
Freestyle 25m 25 secs 50m 42 secs
Backstroke 25m 30 secs  50m 50 secs
Butterfly 25m 27 secs 50m 40 secs
Breaststroke 25m 33 secs 50m 50 secs

PB Club

The PB Club (Personal Best) will be run throughout the season and is open to swimmers up to 12 years of age.  A swimmer will have to achieve 18 PB’s during club nights events to join the PB Club.

The system will work like this: each swimmer will have a sheet containing 18 slots for when they achieve a PB.

After achieving their first 6 PB’s a bronze star will be added to their record sheet.  After achieving another 6 PB’s a silver star will be added and after achieving a further 6 PB's a gold star will be added and a certificate presented to the swimmer welcoming him/her to the Maroubra Swimming Club PB club.

There will be a list on the notice board and website of all swimmers who qualify for the PB Club.

Voucher Club:

is for swimmers 13 years and older and we will be running this 4 times throughout the season. There will be a Westfield gift voucher worth $50 for the boy and girl swimmer who earns the most points in each quarter.  So the more times you attend club nights and the more often your beat your best time, the more points you’ll earn.

Longer Distances

In addition to these distances, we also encourage longer distance swimmers with 200 and 400 metre events held every 3 weeks on alternative Fridays (ie: not both on the same night).  These special events have their own pointscores.  Read more about Olympians Malcolm Allen and Max Metzker Shields.

Club Championships

Maroubra also runs a Club Championship carnival at the end of the season in September. Races are held with medals awarded on the day and Trophies at our Presentation Day.

End of Year Trophies

Pointscores are published on our website an noticeboard every three months.  At the end of the season, points are tallied and trophies awarded on our Presentation Day.
