Maroubra encourages swimmers of all abilities - and some swimmers are more suited to middle and long distance swimming than a "50m dash".   We  encourage swimmers  whose skill is geared towards distance swimming by hosting 200m and 400m events throughout the season.  Each event has its own pointscore.  The pointscore winner at the end of the season takes home a perpetual shield.

The perpetual shields proudly named after Maroubra "Old Boys", Olympians and Commonwealth Games swimmers -  Max Metzker and Malcolm Allen.

About Max Metzker - Max is a two time Olympian, competing at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics in the 400m and 1,500m events.  Max was one of six members of Maroubra to be selected in the Australian team of 27 to compete in the 1978 Commonwealth Games at Edmonton, Canada.  Max was appointed the men's team captain. Max set a Commonwealth record in the 1,500 metres of 15:31:92 and finished 3rd in the 400m freestyle (3:58:83).  Max then teamed up with 2 other Maroubra swimmers - Ron McKeon and Graeme Brewer and with Mark Morgan to set a new Commonwealth record in the 4 by 200 metres freestyle relay (7:34:83) and won the Gold medal.

In 1980, Moscow XXII Olympiad, Max was again the men's team captain and the flag bearer together with sprinter Denise Boyd at the Opening Ceremony.  Max was part of the "Maroubra Big 3" - Max Metzker, Ron McKeon and Graeme Brewer who were selected for the Australian team, .  Max won the Bronze medal in the 1,500 metres freestyle (15:14:49).

In 1982, Max competed at the Commonwealth Games, where he finished first in the 1,500 metres (15:23:94).

About Malcolm Allen - Malcolm Allen represented Australia at the Atlanta Olympic Games in the 400 metre freestyle and the 200m relay.

He joined Maroubra Swimming Club in 1992 where he represented Maroubra at the 1992 Australian Short Course Championships in Darwin, where the team swept the pool, winning 16 medals and becoming the top club in Australia. Later that year, at Malcolm’s first Maroubra Club Championship, he set a Club record for the 50 metre open at 25.19. That record still stands today!

In 1993, Malcolm competed at the World Short Course Championships in the 100 back and the 200, 400 and 1,500 metre freestyle events.

The 1995 World Short Course Championships saw Malcolm compete in the 400 and 1,500 metre events, with strong finishes of 3rd place (3:47:00) and 5th place (15:08:11) respectively.

Malcolm just missed out in representing Australia at the Barcelona Olympics. However, the Olympic dream lived on and in 1996, Malcolm was one of three Maroubra swimmers who were successful in going to the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Malcolm was in good company, with Kieran Perkins, Daniel Kowalski, Michael Klim and Matt Dunn. Malcolm knocked Kieran Perkins out of the 400m freestyle event, where he finished 13th fastest in the world with a time of 3:55.48!.  Malcolm then swam the 200 metre relay with Kowalski, Klim and Dunn, where they finished fourth.
